What Is the Solar Safe Harbor Tax Credit Lock-In?

Commercial and industrial solar have long benefited from strong federal tax incentives, but they are going to be eliminated soon. The Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) allows businesses to deduct 30% to 50% of eligible solar project costs from their federal tax liability.

Projects can be Safe Harbored until July 3rd, 2026. If a project is Safe Harbored and “beginning construction” requirements are met, the project has until December 31st, 2030 to be placed in service.

Why Waiting Could Cost Your Business

Federal Incentives Are Changing

Commercial solar tax incentives are phasing out after 2027. Businesses that wait will lose access to substantial savings opportunities.

Lock In Today’s Incentives

Safe Harbor allows businesses to secure current tax incentive structures now while installing later. A qualifying agreement and a 5% deposit preserve eligibility.

Energy Costs Keep Rising

Commercial utility costs continue climbing across the Midwest. Solar helps businesses reduce long-term operating expenses and improve predictability.

Turn Your Facility Into an Asset

Unused roof space can become a long-term financial advantage through commercial solar generation and energy savings.

Sustainability Drives Business Growth

Customers, investors, and partners increasingly favor companies focused on sustainability and energy independence.

Commercial Solar Safe Harbor FAQs

Businesses preserve current federal solar tax incentives by signing a qualifying agreement and placing a 5% deposit before the deadline.

Businesses that utilize the safe harbor tax credit lock-in can recoup 30% to 50% of their total solar project costs.

By preserving eligibility before the deadline, companies can maximize project ROI while creating long-term energy savings.

No. Safe Harbor allows qualifying businesses to secure eligibility now while completing installation within the next 4 years.

SunMatic Solar® primarily works with commercial and industrial facilities, including manufacturing plants, warehouses, agricultural operations, and commercial buildings.

A SunMatic Solar® specialist will review your facility, discuss eligibility, and help determine whether Safe Harbor is the right fit for your business.

SunMatic Solar® currently focuses on projects throughout Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and surrounding Midwest markets.

The July 4 Safe Harbor deadline is approaching.

Businesses that take action now can preserve today’s solar tax incentives for projects completed over the next four years. For commercial installations, that means recouping 30% to 50% of total project costs while improving long-term energy savings and ROI.

A substantial risk is that your solar provider doesn’t take all the steps of the Safe Harbor, or doesn’t take the steps correctly. If any of the steps are not completed correctly, your project will not qualify and therefore not be eligible the Federal tax credits. If you are not aware of this, it can lead to your company initially getting the tax credit, only for the IRS to recapture it later (with penalties).

The following are the necessary steps / items:

  1. Get a signed agreement in place for the installation of the solar array of the correct size, stating that the down payment is non-reimbursable

  2. Receive down payment from you for 5% of the cost.

  3. Deliver solar equipment that is uniquely identifiable and of appropriate value within 105 dats.

  4. Document the previous steps in detail.
